Neonatal Specialist Nurse

Overview

The post holder will practice within a team of nursing staff and act as a 'named nurse' for a group of patients, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating their care needs.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the multidisciplinary team.
• Co-ordinate a ward area and provide direct supervision to junior staff and students.
• Take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of senior sister or as delegated by the matron.
• Promote Family Integrated Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for babies and their families.
• Demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of all patients receiving treatment on the unit.
• Deliver a high standard of evidence-based nursing care.
• Liaise appropriately with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote effective teamwork.
• Support and facilitate junior staff in their development by participating in unit teaching programmes.
• Ensure the safety of the unit by participating in clinical audit, clinical risk, and quality issues, including reporting critical incidents.
• Liaise with the MDT regarding discharge and follow-up, facilitating the discharge of babies into the community with family support.
• Maintain effective links with the maternity unit, paediatric department, and the neonatal network.
